Erm... Chamberlin Actually Switches to DW ... (?)

I think that actually, jokes aside, Chamberlin may actually have switched manufacturer.
Photographer Rob Shanahan tweeted 2 days ago;
Lights, Camera: Jimmy Chamberlin and DW, killer combo. Great shoot yesterday with Smashing Pumpkins drummer, Chicago boy does good.
Meanwhile, Heather Szeliga fiancée of Breaking Benjamin drummer Chad Szeliga tweets;
Just had dinner with Jimmy chamberlain and Danny Seraphine along with the DW crew . What a great night:

Elsewhere over at SKYSAW's Facebook, they posted a picture of the rehearsals before last Monday's show.  Here, zoomed in, Jimmy is clearly playing a different DW kit to the one he played at the show.  Actually, there's a bit of an amalgam of two different DW kits going on (including the one he used at the show) as far as I can see.  I don't know much about DW myself, having played Yamaha exclusively for the past 15 years. So, if anyone has any details about which kit(s) he is using, please share in the comments.

  1. As odd as it is to see this, it's certainly understandable that he'd want to try something different and switch things up after all this time.

    I've always thought of Yamaha as having a "tight/focused" sound, & DW as having a "round/fat" sound. (Of course, this is just opinion and there are tons of variables).

    Interestingly, Peter Erskine (jazz drummer) also made the switch from Yammy to DW a while back.

    Jimmy did an interview around 2005 or so where he was raving about the craftsmanship of the Yamaha artisans, and how any other brand of drums he'd checked out were "garbage, just total crap" (paraphrasing). Of course everyone makes blanket statements occasionally. I'm sure he totally loves Yamaha and just wants to branch out & experiment.

  2. I don't know that an artist's agreement with a sponsoring company allows them to branch out and experiment with competing products. Over the course of his career, he has had ample opportunity to experiment, anyway. He wouldn't make an experiment of the first show of a new band. Wouldn't happen. Two different JC DW kits = change in brand loyalty. I'll bet my snare on it.

    I second that.

    That has probably something to do with it.

    I still like the sound of Yamaha though.

  4. Apparently Erskine left Yamaha because he wanted some flat based "vintage" looking cymbal stands and Yamaha didn't wanna try his idea so he went to DW... who subsequently now make flat based stands.

    It's a shame if JC has left Yamaha, i've been loyal to Yamaha all my life (even lucky enough to score an endorsement!) and to have my favourite drummer in the world still stand by their product is pretty cool to me. But yeah he has no obligations to stay with Yamaha if he wants to move on, he can get out of his contract.

    That and the fact Yamaha aren't making sig drums anymore means the JC sig snare will no longer exist! Glad I got mine ;)
