Yamaha Discontinues Signature Snares

OK, there's been some rumours floating around here and elsewhere on the www. I spoke to my friend, the owner of my local drum shop, and he confirmed it. Apparently it was announced at the NAMM show earlier this year and none are listed on the official site any more. They've stopped making them now, so any brand new signature series snares you can still get, are the last.

  1. Actually, on the Yamaha Drums US site right now, signature snares are still available and there is no indication otherwise. I do not doubt your information, but I think there's more to it than meets the eye.

  2. Metal snare drums that I've seen usually have that indented band that's running parallel across the middle of the shell, curving outward. I notice that the JC snare has the indented band curving inward (concave instead of convex). I wonder what the significance of this is in terms of sound.

I have an old Ludwig metal snare that looks similar to the JC snare but the band across the snare shell curves outward. Is this just a cosmetic choice?
