Comment away!!!
ReplyDeleteRemember the turnorbeturned website with the snare drum auction pics? I'd love to find the archive of that page.
ReplyDeleteNow that we can comment here I am at a loss of what to say. I know it will come, though.
I do remember... I've had a look through some archived stuff I have from when I was admin on the complex boards, before it went to the dogs when FQ took over, but I can't find that I saved the photos :(
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what type of drumheads were used during the Complex recordings and tour?
ReplyDeleteIn the Remo drumhead selection video (http://themachinesomehow.blogspot.com/2011/03/jimmy-chamberlin-drumhead-selection.html) Jimmy mentions several types of coated heads. But Complex-era video footage from the studio and concerts shows him playing clear drumheads.
I'm currently playing a borrowed drum kit, and as a courtesy (and selfdefense ;P) will be replacing the heads. I've never done this before and would like to make an informed decision.
The coated heads Jimmy plays in the Remo video sound cool, but wouldn't mesh well with the music I'm playing (indie rock, slightly on the heavy side). However, the sound from the Complex period (created by more than just heads, I know) would fit a lot better.
Hey Andra - Not quite so sure about recording - but certainly touring he was using; Remo coated Ambassador on snare batter. Clear Emperors on tops of toms with clear Ambassadors on the bottoms. PowerStroke 3 on bass drum batter - Ambassador on the front.
ReplyDeleteComment: In 1996, all of the 'info' suggests JC was using a 24" kick. However, in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhSs1ie0W6A&feature=related), amongst others, it genuinely appears as though he is using something smaller... maybe even a 20". I remember some article years ago where he mentioned considering swapping out the 24" bc it was making his forearms sore reaching 'up' to the toms. I'm just looking for opinions, not being a know it all.
ReplyDeleteAlso, regarding drum head selection (again, not to sound like a know it all...) but the drum head selection was dependent on the situation. In the clubs with shitty sound they were most certainly clear emperors (if he was playing a birch kit, if a maple kit they would likely have been ambassadors). If playing at home as most of us are, coated emperors/ambassadors would have been used. It really depends on the acoustics of the room. Lots of absorbent surfaces allow for 'ringier' heads to be used.
ReplyDeleteA note about the Yamaha JC Signature Snare: This summer will mark three years since the announcement regarding the discontinuation of Yamaha's signature snare lineup, however, all snares produced 3 years ago are still available. Furthermore, there are additions to the line! Has Yamaha changed their mind? Or perhaps are they not creating any more new sig snares, yet maintaining production of old ones? Maybe they are all just back stock? Anyone have any idea?
